About the Position

Alaska Regional Hospital is seeking a qualified and experienced Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) to join its Laboratory team in Anchorage, Alaska. The successful candidate will play an important role in providing accurate and reliable laboratory testing that supports patient diagnosis and treatment.

Key Responsibilities

The Medical Laboratory Scientist will be responsible for:

  • Receiving and processing blood specimens and performing hematology testing.
  • Evaluating blood-cell morphology using microscopic techniques.
  • Performing routine and specialized clinical laboratory tests across multiple laboratory sections.
  • Using automated analyzers, manual testing procedures, and microscopic examination to generate accurate laboratory results.
  • Operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting laboratory equipment, including chemistry analyzers, ion-specific electrodes, osmometers, and other automated systems.
  • Performing antibody screening, antibody identification, and blood crossmatching procedures.
  • Identifying clinically significant antibodies in patient and donor specimens to help ensure safe blood transfusion.
  • Communicating critical laboratory results promptly to physicians and nursing staff.
  • Supporting the implementation of new laboratory testing methods, products, and instrumentation.
  • Maintaining high standards of laboratory quality, accuracy, safety, and patient care.

Required Qualifications

Candidates should meet the following requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or a related scientific field, including appropriate practical training.
  • An Associate’s degree may be considered with the required laboratory experience.
  • Nationally recognized professional certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) through ASCP or an equivalent certifying organization.
  • 3–5 years of laboratory experience.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS/BCLS) certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
