About the Role

Spire Southampton Hospital is seeking a Specialist Biomedical Scientist (Training Lead) to join its pathology team in Southampton. This position is ideal for an experienced Biomedical Scientist who is passionate about laboratory excellence, staff development, and delivering high-quality diagnostic services.

The successful candidate will support the management and development of pathology services, coordinate training and education activities, and work closely with the Laboratory Consultant, Pathology Manager, and National Pathology Training team to maintain high clinical and operational standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and support training, education, and competency development for pathology staff.
  • Perform specialist biomedical investigations, analysis, interpretation, and reporting.
  • Ensure accurate handling, processing, and management of laboratory specimens.
  • Contribute to research, service development, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Apply advanced laboratory technologies and best practices within specialist disciplines.
  • Maintain compliance with clinical governance, laboratory quality standards, and health & safety regulations.
  • Promote equality, diversity, and patient-centred care across pathology services.
  • Support infection prevention and control policies within the laboratory.
  • Collaborate with consultants, laboratory managers, and national pathology education teams.
  • Assist in maintaining efficient, cost-effective, and high-quality pathology services.

Requirements

Applicants should have:

  • Degree in Biomedical Science, Medical Laboratory Science, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Registration as a Biomedical Scientist with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Experience working in a clinical or scientific laboratory environment.
  • Strong understanding of pathology service delivery and laboratory quality standards.
  • Experience in staff training, mentoring, or education.
  • Knowledge of clinical audit and quality assurance processes.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organisational skills.
  • Experience within the independent healthcare sector is desirable.

Working Hours

  • 37.5 hours per week
  • Rotating shifts including:
    • Standard: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
    • Early: 6:30 AM – 2:30 PM
    • Late: 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM
    • Weekend shifts on a rota
  • Participation in the on-call rota is required.
  • Candidates must live within approximately 30 minutes of the hospital to respond to urgent on-call requests.
